katie & denis | 4.18.09 @ stillwell house | tucson arizona wedding photography

You’ll remember Katie & Denis’ awesome engagement photos we took at the very end of last year (in fact, the 2nd to last photoshoot I did for 2008) and since then I had been really looking forward to their wedding.  They are such a fun, genuine couple that are truly in love.  I didn’t know much about their story until Sergio (the best man) gave his wedding speech/toast at the wedding, and what a fun and amazing couple they are!  Sergio, who undoubtedly gave the very best wedding speech (Lib’s was just as awesome as well!) I’ve ever heard in wedding history, insomuch that I really felt like I got to know Katie & Denis so much more and how wonderful a couple they make!  The light throughout the whole day was beautiful (thank you AZ, you’re always kind to me) and it was just a blast to be there with them.  The Stillwell House is always a fun place to shoot at, awesome details, superb staff and awesome food as well!  Thanks again guys for allowing me to work with you both on such a special day, I feel so lucky!

Also. big props to my buddy Sergio, sergiomottola.com, who flew down from Seattle for the weekend and came and shot this wedding with me.  You can see his stuff on his blog!  His style is such a breath of fresh air, he definitely beats to the tune of his own drum and copies no one.

Almost every wedding, the guests will be missing this kind of reaction of the groom when he sees the bride walking down the aisle.  Everyone always looks down the aisle at the beautiful bride (like above), but miss the sweet tender expressions of the groom.

On technical standpoint, this was my favorite lens of the day.  Gotta love the wide 24L loving, just fantabulous

Hard to say which one I like better.  But I bounced my flash on Sergio (the photographer) who was off the side, and also held a napkin up near the flash to create this effect.  You don’t need fancy tools to get the job done some times, just some ingenuity :)

Amanda & Jason | continued . . . Tucson Airport Engagement Portraits

Well after the awesome day with Amanda & Jason on Saturday where the emotions were high, I wasn’t sure how yesterday was going to turn out.  Mainly because it was going to be hard to top the experience and photos that we took during the actual engagement, the amazing security clearance that was given to create photos on the airplane and the Tarmac and other awesome places.  Well, yesterday was a home run (no pun intended).

We started at a downtown location and took some fun portraits, but the real fun began when we were able to go over to Hi Corbett field and have the entire field to ourselves.  What can I say, I guess my name has some clout and people allow me to do some pretty cool things if I just ask for it :) (Thanks a TON Eric, it totally made everything awesome!)  Anyway, it was the most beautiful day this week and it made for some pretty awesome portraits.  Amanda & Jason were just bubbling with fun, love and awesomeness the entire time, and you can tell in the photos below.  Thanks again you guys, I’m so honored to have been part of so many special things for you guys and can’t wait for the wedding!

Mom’s love these kind of pictures :)

Everyone at the Southwest gate was so gracious and accommodating, it made for some cool opportunities for sure!

So, here is Jason.  Jason is getting ready to ask Amanda to be his wife.  It was a tricky task, but it was pulled off flawlessly (in my opinion).  We had been taking portraits atop the stairs (in the next photo), and we needed to create a diversion that would force Amanda to stay up stairs while Jason got his flowers and sign.  Scott, Amanda’s brother, had come and was hiding ninja-like the entire time waiting for the drop-off.  We made Amanda change her shirt, 2 times, so that we would be ready for her when she came down the escalator.

A lot of the airport personnel watched along, and as soon as Amanda said yes, they all clapped.  It was one of those “awwwww” kind of moments :)

They met on a Southwest flight, and when the got off the plane, they sat in one of the terminals and chatted for a long time.  I loved the lighting on this one!

We sort of simulated them meeting for the first time on the plane.  It was SOOO awesome being on the plane!  Made me feel like we were really heading somewhere . . .

Another awesome shot from the Tarmac, can’t decide which one I like better!

This was totally spontaneous . . . they just walked onto the field and did this without any premeditation or direction.  I was lucky I was just in the right place at the right time, makes a GREAT series!  They sure hit a home run with everything else that day!

This is now my all-time most favoritist (is that a word?) picture.  Not only is the lighting, the expression, the mood and color just awesome . . . but also knowing that this same pic couldn’t have been taken with a Nikon, priceless :P

This one comes in a close 2nd or 3rd for favorite image of the day.  This isn’t special Photoshop effects or anything else, this is real photography here.  No enhancements.  Just a special lens that makes a special picture.  Does your photographer do cool stuff like this?

Rene & Steve | Wildhorse Oasis Arizona Wedding

I know, I know, I’ve been very far behind on all my blog postings, but I’m just now getting back to some of my favorite shoots from the past couple of weeks.  I was able to work with Rene & Steve back in the beginning of March, so their photos are long due for a blog posting!  They are getting married in just over 2 weeks and I’m pretty stoked about it!

We started over at Wildhorse Ranch (where their ceremony and reception will take place) and it is a fun and charming location to work with.  Lots of character and beauty all around.  Since both Rene & Steve graduated from the UA, we thought it fitting to find some great locations and have some fun over on campus.  There are some pretty great locations there, some new favorites in here for sure!  I love being able to be creative and abstract with some of my work, yet still keep it full of fun and energy with my clients!  Thanks again Rene & Steve!

Amanda & Jason – True Engagement! | Arizona Wedding Photography

I had a first today, they don’t happen very often, but when they do I get excited. This was a first on many levels, but I’ll start with the love story I guess. Amanda & Jason met on a Southwest flight. They chatted and apparently fancied each other in some form and their conversation continued beyond the flight and into the Tucson airport where they stopped at a lounge for additional get-to-know-you opportunities. All that I know is that that friendship and relationship has now come to fruition into upcoming “I Do’s”. I had the great opportunity to photograph Amanda & her family a while back, and what a great family they have. I had heard rumors dating back almost 2 months ago that Amanda & Jason were getting a little serious about their relationship, and only hoped that I would be able to work with the Dillon’s again and photograph Amanda’s big day.

This rumor was supposedly on the down-low, even though they had already set a date, and hired me as the official photographer; all without a ring and a “will you?”   Well it happened today while we were taking their “pre-engagement” photos (pre because they weren’t really engaged until about a good 45 mins into the session). Jason, Scott (Amanda’s brother) and I had coordinated a special surprise for Amanda. It took a little trickery to get it pulled off just right, but it turned out amazing. Jason surprised Amanda with some roses, and got down on one knee to finally present her with a ring and pop the question for reals. Of course you can imagine what the answer was, but it was so amazing to be there for such a special moment.  Everyone clapped :)

Southwest Airlines watched along as it unfolded, and kindly enough one of the gate agents asked if we would like to go take some pictures in the gate area, on the plane and even the Tarmac. Let me put it this way, when someone offers you this kind of security clearance and a personal escort, you say “YES”. It was sure a lot of fun, and big thanks to all the Southwest Airlines personel, TSA, TAA and those that helped with everything. I know they will never forget the moment and how much fun it really was! I just wanted to share one picture . . . because they met on a Southwest Airlines flight, this was something that they connected with on many levels. Thanks again Amanda & Jason!

More pics to come!
