Awards

I recently entered into an international competition for some of my images.  I have never been into this sort of thing as there was no need for it personally.  I have always viewed it as a way for photographers to make money from photographers (the organizations and judges) and for other photographers to brag and say “hey peeps! I’m an international award winning photographer”.  Nothing wrong with either reasons, but it’s just not really me.

So, I thought I would send in some photos just for fun, see what the judges would think as winners in certain categories.  Seeing how I’ve never really had any experience with preparing images for competition (a large part of the score is simply based on the print quality, the paper, the presentation and other things beyond the photograph), so it was a learning experience for me.  Knowing full well that my images were NOT printed up to par, I’m surprised I did as well as I did honestly. This was for the WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) 8×10 competition, which isn’t quite at the same level as a 16×20 competition. So, hopefully with some tweaks and extra printing quality I might even do a little better at the next.

As a side note, 1900 images were submitted in this round of competition.

Just thought I’d share the 2 that won awards, in the Senior and Wedding Detail categories:

Caitlin | Tucson Senior Portrait

Caitlin is awesome.  We had so much fun shooting on Monday and I hope that it goes to show!  We started at the Tanque Verde Guest Ranch, which seems to have become a popular place for my seniors, and then headed to the ever popular downtown area.  I knew that both Caitlin and her mom were both very stoked and she brought her A-game for sure.  I love the variety in all of these!

I’m trying a new test here, more of a thank you for my clients!  Leave a comment below and Caitlin will get a nice gift from the studio!  If she gets more than 20 comments (let her know which are your favs) then we’ll let you all know her awesome gift!

Stephanie & Fabian | UofA Engagement

I get the coolest locations. Period. End of story. I also get the coolest couples in the whole world. Stephanie & Fabian happen to be one of them. You don’t even need to know them to realize how cool they are, just check out their pics! Fabian works at the UA and hooked us up with some sweet access to the famous McKale center and also the UA Football stadium. Our expectations were high, but unfortunately we ran into some pitfalls: 1. McKale was setup for a Volleyball game later that evening, so it wasn’t nearly as fun as it could have been :( 2. Football stadium had just been fertilized, so there was a tarp covering the field :( 3. We had very short amounts of time at each location :( Good thing was, we didn’t need anything more because they both brought their A game.

There are a lot of pictures that I cannot necessarily post because I am also restricted on not posting any photographs that contain any official UA logos and other UA Sports paraphernalia. They are getting married in April and I CANNOT WAIT.

First off, any true Wildcat fan should recognize the signature on this ball. In fact, this was a hall-of-fame signature studded ball for sure! Which one is worth more, the ring or the ball?

Valerie & Steve | Mesa Wedding, Wright House, Tucson Reception

Boy have I been excited to post these. Many of you might have seen a couple photo tweets with some teasers, but I had such a blast working with Valerie & Steve on both their engagement portraits (at the Tucson Ritz-Carlton) and now with their awesome wedding. The temperature had cooled down the week before their wedding, but the day of their wedding our wonderful sun had to rear its nasty hot flares in our direction. It was bright and got hot very quickly . . . but their pics were definitely hotter! They were married at the Mesa LDS Temple in Phoenix and then shortly thereafter a wonderful luncheon was provided at The Wright House, which was my first time at this venue. Very Victorian and romantic setting for a great reception (or luncheon in this case). Awesome interiors and cool courtyard = win!

After some great frames at the Wright House, we traveled back to Tucson for an evening reception at a local chapel. A very fun and very unique wedding day for me! Congrats again to Valerie & Steve!

For the photographers, this wedding set was processed almost entirely with Presetopia Presets v2 which just came out this week! Make sure you grab your copy while they are on sale. Sale ends Nov 9th!

LOVED this exit shot, sooooo hot!

I normally don’t post formals, but I thought I’d post this as a demo/lesson about lighting. The 2 pictures here are nearly identical, taken within 2 seconds of each other. The one on the left is “natural” light, meaning only ambient light was used. The one on the right used “artificial” light (known as a flash) to enhance the scene. Both are great portraits in my book. BUT, it just goes to show how lighting can dramatically change the mood or feel of a portrait. The one on the right required a VERY powerful flash, which most photographers I know shooting these days don’t care to lug around. It’s not needed, but, every photographer should know why they are lighting their portraits the way they are!

Loved this other courtyard shot. You can see some lens flare, and the flare ended up highlighting the bride & groom!

I LOVED her flowers. They remind me of Andi’s flowers from Tubac, except not roses of course

Little backstory: Cake cutting obviously going on here, but, Steve thought he could sneak a fast one by Valerie and not allow her to feed him the cake, so he took a bight of his own and got what he deserved :)

Another great sparkler exit. Valerie & Steve were a little late with their exit and most of the sparklers had extinguished by then :( Still was fun!
