My weekend with a Canon 5D mk3

Where to begin.  In September of 2008 Canon announced a long awaited update to the  Canon 5D.  The most disappointing thing about the Canon 5D mk2 was that the AF had not changed.  When Nikon was putting pro level AF into their D700, people were a little upset about that and Nikon gained some market share because of it.  I enjoyed shooting with my Canon 5D2’s for a LONG time.  I received both of my 5D2 cameras in November 2008 (if you remember, my first body broke within a few hours of using it…some weird mirror thing that had to be returned).  But, the addition of 14-bit color, better high ISO noise control and a slew of other features made the 5D2 a worthy upgrade.  I’ve shot a few hundred thousand images and can easily say it was a beautiful  camera.  I never let the poor AF be an excuse for me to not get any shots, but, I always wished it was better.

Workflow Christmas Sale!

Another post for Photographers:

It’s been almost a year since we our Workflow DVD and we’ve heard a ton of great feedback from photographers who are saving hours every time they edit a shoot.  We love hearing that!  Because of the amazing value of the instruction and the goodies from our awesome sponsors (every buyer gets a $100 BRI gift card, Motibodo and ProPhoto discounts and much more), we have never had a sale before…until now.

Genesis: Chapter 3

This post is for photographers, but it’s not a bad read either :)

I feel so incredibly lucky, dumbfounded, excited and incompetent to be part of something so incredible. Genesis, a worskhop by photographer, for photographers, is one of the very few workshops I have ever heard of that I feel honest in being able to recommend to photographers. I’ve never really had a chance to recommend it to others because it sells out in a mere few hours…but, it’s put on by some of my very dear and good friends. Sam Hassas, Tony Hoffer & Melanie + Jeff Mansfield.  Having known them for years and understanding their expertise in what they do, this is a workshop that brings substance, value and legitimate educational value to any photographer looking to up their game. The only thing different now is that I’m part of it – teaching, sharing my meager knowledge with hungry photographers. No pressure right?

workflow dvd // for photographers

Hey photographers!  I’m currently in the thick of things planning and producing a new DVD called “Workflow” (original right?!), which will cover my almost-famous-whatever-you-want-to-call-it 4 hour workflow.  My good friend Tony Hoffer and I are really excited about the amount of content we are including in this awesome DVD.  If you want to sign up for news and announcements, then head on over to the Photographer Workflow website for all that fun stuff.  I promise you’re gonna love it.

PS – If you are going to WPPI this year, I’ll be speaking at the Black River Imaging booth Monday morning at 10am about all these goodies.

Awards

I recently entered into an international competition for some of my images.  I have never been into this sort of thing as there was no need for it personally.  I have always viewed it as a way for photographers to make money from photographers (the organizations and judges) and for other photographers to brag and say “hey peeps! I’m an international award winning photographer”.  Nothing wrong with either reasons, but it’s just not really me.

So, I thought I would send in some photos just for fun, see what the judges would think as winners in certain categories.  Seeing how I’ve never really had any experience with preparing images for competition (a large part of the score is simply based on the print quality, the paper, the presentation and other things beyond the photograph), so it was a learning experience for me.  Knowing full well that my images were NOT printed up to par, I’m surprised I did as well as I did honestly. This was for the WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) 8×10 competition, which isn’t quite at the same level as a 16×20 competition. So, hopefully with some tweaks and extra printing quality I might even do a little better at the next.

As a side note, 1900 images were submitted in this round of competition.

Just thought I’d share the 2 that won awards, in the Senior and Wedding Detail categories:

Data Management, Backup Solution: For Photographers

First and foremost, I want to mention that this article/blogpost/guide is a long time in the making.  Not that I have been working and preparing my comments for a number of months, but that it has been on my mind for probably one year now.  A lot of friends and colleagues have asked me a lot about my current data management and backup system and I feel the desire to help others better understand the options that are available today.

Although the intended audience for this post is mainly for photographers or anyone who wants a little more insight about digital asset management, it is a good read for anyone who wants to understand how important it is to have a photographer (or graphic designer, printer, etc etc) who takes their digital assets very seriously.  If you were a bride, how would you feel if your photographer had to explain to you that your images were lost, deleted, destroyed.  You probably would not like it and you would probably wonder what happened.  A photographer that does NOT take digital asset management seriously, should not be toying with events as important as weddings.  More after the break.

Open House Success!

Wow, it’s hard to know where to start saying thank you and where to start grovelling for all those that have helped and supported me in getting the Studio off the ground! The Open House was a success and I thank everyone that was in attendance and helped make it a great evening. I wish I had more time to speak to everyone that came, there were quite a few people that showed up and made greeting everyone a little difficult, but it was still very humbling and awesome at the same time seeing everyone that came. I hope you all enjoyed it!

Now that the Studio Open House is over, I think I can start thinking about getting back to work on actual client projects, it has consumed so much of my time!  I feel proud to show it off though, it looks sweet!  My blog is definitely happy that I’m back on here, it’s been neglected a bit :(

My dad goofing off before everyone was arriving.  I can honestly say I owe all my success to him!

Business Portraits

I don’t get a whole lot of requests for professional business portraits in Tucson, usually because it’s often something I overlook on the marketing end.  I don’t consider these “run and gun” type of jobs but approach them with the same care and attention as any other type of portrait.

Many business professionals overlook such an important role a professional portrait can be.  Potential customers can make a more personal connection on many levels if you use your portrait on your website, business cards, marketing materials, etc . . .  It puts a face to a name.  Most professionals understand this concept, BUT, I know lots of people (and I’m sure you do to) that have really bad pictures.  A bad picture is WORSE than no picture.  Know anyone that hasn’t said “cheese” in a while? I promise I’ll never make you say that though.

Just thought I’d show a few recent examples :)

Based on their portraits, how many of these people would you NOT want to meet?  I hope your portrait is doing work for you in ways you never thought, and hopefully not working against it’s goal.

Reyna – Downtown | relaxed portraits in tucson arizona

This monsoon season sure makes things interesting as far as planning for outdoor portrait sessions.  You never know when it’s going to clear up, and out of nowhere it can start pouring again.  Oh well, atleast I’m not melting anymore :)   Anyway, I had a fun session with Reyna, who is an aspiring photographer and needed some great shots for hew new website.  This was located in downtown Tucson, and it was the perfect time for some great portraits, beautiful weather that wasn’t too hot (but then again I still sweat my head off!)  Thanks for being so awesome Reyna!!

Album & Product Samples!

The long wait is over. Meagan & Nate’s album came in this week and it totally rocks! The colors and sharpness of an ASUKABOOK are just awesome. I love it, and luckily they did too :) I’m trying to get more photos of my actual products and thought it would be a good time to get some more.

Also check out my new CD cases, they’re hip and jazzin’ (at least I think so)!

Rachel

I had a great portrait session with Rachel yesterday at La Paloma.  The resort is a very pleasant atmosphere and provided some great setups and backdrops.  As we were wrapping up we happened upon this nice place outdoors that just totally meshed with everything.  Turns out it was the winning shot!

Anyways, Rachel is a member of BNI, an organization to which we both attend that helps us build our business and network with other small businesses in Tucson.  It’s a great place to meet new people and connect with others that can augment your current network of associates.  Rachel is a Life Coach, and has actually been helping me with my business.  It’s been great to keep better track of my goals and desires, and it’s sure paying off already!
