jihan // abc infant lifestyle

It’s hard to convey how excited I was when I originally got the email from this family.  The dad works with a very good client of mine (for whom I also created an ABC book) and asked if I could create an ABC book for his daughter…in Brazil.  Since I lived in Brazil for 2 years (2003-2005) and have been dying for a reason to go back, it was a match made in heaven for me.  They live in Rio de Janeiro and we had an amazing 4 days together visiting lots of sites, and creating some memorable and personal images for their family.  Thank you again, this was the most fun I’ve had in a very long time and can’t wait to go back!

I love these guys.  They just fit so well together and are oozing with love and spontaneity, its too cute :)  We had an awesome afternoon at the Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain golf club.  It’s a gorgeous place and the weather was simply amazing.  Can’t wait for their wedding this fall at the resort!

Chloe is very natural in front of the camera, it seemed like she couldn’t take a bad photo!  We also did this session in record time and still rocked out some amazing photos!  Thank you Chloe!

Another post for the photographers!

As you all know (read here if you don’t!), I’m incredibly excited and humbled to be teaching at the next Genesis Workshop this coming March. If you haven’t read about this amazing workshop, I highly recommend spending a few minutes on the website to get some more info on the incredible location and amenities: www.genesisworkshop.com

Erin + Dean are FUN.  They are madly in love, and they know how to joke around and laugh, a LOT.  Downtown tucson is always a great place, but I’m really really glad we were able to try a new spot on Mt. Lemmon which was just absolutely gorgeous!  Really excited for their wedding this coming spring, can’t wait!  Thanks Erin & Dean!

Hannah is an another hardcore softball player- complete with a recent injury. But you would never guess with such awesome pictures! We had a blast in Benson, AZ where we found some totally awesome abandoned train cars. Thank you, Hannah, for such a great session!

brianna // senior

It’s getting close to wrapping up senior season, but I’m super glad that I had the chance to work with Brianna.  She’s incredibly smart, a long-distance runner, a new older sister, and has a contagious loving personality that just makes you smile when you are around her!  Looking forward to working with her family later this year, and thank you again for a great session Brianna!

It’s always fun trying new locations and ideas for senior portraits!  Karolyn wanted lots of color, and something somewhat traditional and classy, yet still a lot of fun.  I think we nailed it.  Thank you Karolyn!

SavannahBon-017

savannah // senior

Savannah has a knack for fashion, and for hotdogs.  We even went to Guero Canelos (they have the BEST sonoran hotdogs out there) for some fun pics!  We all had way too much fun creating her pics.  Fun, demure and beautiful, this is Savannah.

katie // senior

It’s been a constant two weeks of senior portraits, with another 3-4 weeks already full.  I love working with seniors because each one is different, unique and original in their own way.  Katie wanted to try some fun portraits on the UofA campus.  Fun is definitely how I’d desribe them.  We finished off her portrait session with a more urban vibe.  Thanks Katie!

adria + isaac // seniors

Adria + Isaac are brother & sister that are both graduating this coming May (not twins either).  We planned a customized session for both of them and just had a blast.  Although most guys don’t admit it, older brothers love their sisters and their family.  Photographing siblings makes for fun jokes, inside jabs and other comments that only a sibling would appreciate (and bear).  Thanks to this awesome family, it was SOOO much fun!

marcus + bianka // love + hair

It was all about the hair . . . basically.  Marcus + Bianka planned a fun portrait session to capture their relationship, and also to commemorate the hair, Marcus’ that is.  He’s had dreadlocks for 7 years and it was finally time to get it cut.  Needless to say, they were such a fun and awesome couple to work with and it’s hard to pick just a few to share!  I’m curious to see what he looks like now without dreads . . .

laura + david // family & maternity

I was pretty excited when I first met with Laura + David, and for a couple of reasons.  To be honest, I have never really been asked about maternity photos in the past because I don’t show any on my website or blog.  There is a certain style that generally has stayed with some of the past and current trends of maternity and infant portraits: bare bellies, half-naked mothers, elaborate and gimmicky props and a whole bunch of things that I have never cared for as a photographer.  I have always, from day one, always focused on realism: real people being themselves.  I do NOT want to prematurely ‘date’ my photographs by including hokey props and other things I find silly . . . mainly because I could never see myself doing those things if I were the subject!  Over the past years I have seen millions of photographs from all different genres and talents, and I can always tell when photographs are “fake’, in the sense that the subjects doing whatever they are doing in the photographs isn’t something that they ever do, and most certainly not on a regular basis.  This is all fine, but the fantasy style elaborate sets and themes has just never jelled with my style.  What excited me most about working with Laura + David was that they saw my vision and LOVED the ‘documentary’ type approach to portraits: real people doing real everyday things.

They described to me what their normal, everyday life is like on a typical average week.  They love each other, they love their totally awesome home, they love to cook, and they love their two dogs.  Although they still wanted some more directed portraits for the home, and to commemorate the maternity experience, they still loved the idea of capturing what life was like before the new baby, because maybe it would never be the same again :)  Laura + David are proud parents of a new baby girl, and having seen some of their own photographs from home, she looks absolutely ADORABLE . . . so there are a few more portrait sessions of this family already coming in the future, can’t wait.

Share a comment with them, everyone loves hearing how good they look :)

film + family

When I first got involved with photography, like most people, I learned on a digital camera.  While I love the benefits and advantages that the digital realm can offer in terms of quality, workflow and many other things, I have always had a passion for the look and feel of film.  Now, when I look at old film photographs from the early century and how it has evolved as film formats have changed, the colors, contrast and depth of field has always enamored me.  I’ve shot some film over the past 4 years in my career and have loved the approach and look of the images, but the workflow and technical side of taking that image from an analog source to digital has been a struggle.

Not too long ago the opportunity arose to purchase the film camera of my dreams and I jumped on it.  Ever since I became acquainted with the many different medium and large format cameras, the Contax stood out to me above all others.  Since the acquisition of the 645 camera, I have fallen in love with how fun photography has become!  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE photographing people, families and real moments on digital.  But, the approach I take for photographing on film has really different, REALLY fun, and with a look that cannot be duplicated with digital.  So, like any boy with a new toy, I wanted to go out and play and have some fun with the new camera and get to know its characteristics . . . as well as the many challenges I’ve run into with bringing the analog images into digital format to create the many awesome products that I offer.

My good friends Lashley & Tania (I’ve known Lash since I was literally 4 years old) were due for some new family portraits and it was the perfect opportunity for a day with the new system.  My approach was to document their family, as they are, with no real direction, so that in 10 years they could look back on these photographs and remember what it was like as a young family.  A lot of most portrait photographers work (and I’ll admit that some of mine as well) is very contrived, “fake” in the sense that the photographer is trying to create something that isn’t necessarily true.  Accompanied with this style is a LOT of digital manipulation (not my style!!) to tweak, alter and create something that wasn’t there before (adding textures, altering the focus, changing skies or scenery).  I don’t have a problem with that, it just has never been my style.  Occasionally I’ll have done some extreme edits, but  99% of all the photographs that you see on my blog have not been doctored, altered or really tweaked in any way.  I have always tried to capture my portraits as raw, real and full of emotion.  While I do add some oomph to contrast and colors, or correct for crooked horizons, most of the photography you see isn’t very far from what the reality was.

Enter my approach with film, reality is pushed even further.  Everything is real, no doctoring, no contrived smiles or poses, just pure life as it happens.  A lot of this style and influence comes from my good friend Evan Baines (who primarily is a wedding photojournalist), but it has pushed me towards a passion about photography that I have somewhat divorced for the “rockstar” type images.  Since the beginning of the year, I’ve attended many national and worldwide conventions and have seen a LOT of some of the VERY BEST photography being created today, it really is quite phenomenal.  Since these conventions, I walked away doing a lot of self inflection on my own style, and what I want to accomplish as a portrait photographer.  Had my scans been better, I would love to include the actual border of the film, just so you can see that the composition and everything else about the photograph was straight out of the camera.  Below are scans I did myself, and boy was that time consuming.  But, to me, the portraits and documentation is very real, almost tangible in that you can almost feel like you were there watching.  I hope this is something you’ll all enjoy, and expect to see more of it in the future!

leah // willcox senior

It’s been a while since I blogged, I know . . . but all for a good reason. I’ve had a LOT of new projects and clients that I’ve been working on and the blog has taken the back-burner. It just means you will be seeing the blog a little more often in the next 2 weeks. This is your “next week I’m going to be less productive at work” warning.

Leah is one of those reasons. Awesome girl that is totally natural in front of the camera. She traveled from Willcox for her Senior Portraits and I made sure not to disappoint. Leah said one of her favorite classes is American Government, so, who knows, maybe we’ll all see her in the political limelight someday. Her mom, her dog and her best friend Stephanie came and tagged along, all the merrier in my opinion. Thanks for such a great session Leah, I LOVED your pics!

stevie + kyle // wedding, mesa arizona

If you haven’t seen enough of these awesome folks, then here’s another 30+ images from their wedding day.  We started super early at 6:30am at the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple in order to have the best light for their portraits.  I don’t shoot in the morning very often, but this day was different in the quality and color of light, creating an almost pastel palette of colors and tones.  I loved it, I should shoot more in the wee morning hours more often . . . the only problem is maybe finding people who would be up for it :D   It was a pleasure working with them and their families on such a beautiful day, I couldn’t have asked for more.  Later that evening we traveled back to Tucson for their wedding reception at their wonderful home.  One of the best receptions I’ve attended, maybe because they built their house knowing they would be hosting weddings there!  They rocked an awesome photbooth (see post just below this!) and the decorations, food and fun was definitely a night to remember.  Thanks again to all who partied with us!

Also a big thanks to my assistant for the morning, Jeff Ambrose.  Always a pleasure to have you come!

Man I love this family!  I had another awesome wedding this weekend with the Loftfield family, I could probably work with them every weekend and I probably wouldn’t get tired of it.  They know how to have fun and party and that makes my job just that much better.  Here are a few of my favorite portraits from their photobooth at the reception.  Hard not to post more because they are all so awesome, but I think 30 should suffice :)

sydney // senior portraits

I’m back from Vegas and ready for a full week of productive work, and most importantly is get caught up on some much needed blogging! I had a chance to work with Sydney over 2 months ago on an awesome senior portrait session in the downtown area. Her dog, Dazzle, shined in front of the camera as well (lame pun :D ) I think we were able to create a lot of unique variety with her session and have fun making some photographs that really speak about who she is. Thanks again Sydney!

saundra + michael // mesa, arizona wedding

Saundra + Michael finally tied the knot almost 2 weeks ago in Mesa AZ.  Everything about working with them has just been a real pleasure, like old friends hanging out and having a good time.  Both of their families are just wonderful and it was my honor to have been able to participate in such a special event for everyone, and I can’t wait for her sister Stevie’s wedding in just a few weeks.  Then I get to enjoy all the crazy partying with awesome people all over again!  Congratulations again to Saundra + Michael, I wish you both the best!

megan’s sweet sixteen

I love my job because I get to work with such awesome and fun people, and Megan’s sweet sixteen party is near the top of the list of fun and awesome photoshoots! Megan’s mom contacted me not too long before her planned birthday extravaganza and had a fantastic idea in mind: surprise photoshoot for 16 cheerleader friends. It evolved to some standard studio portraits of all the girls having a blast into a full blown surprise fashion session atop a downtown Tucson parking garage at 10pm at night. TOTALLY COOL in my book if you ask me. All the girls got all glam’d up, hit the town on a scavenger hunt in a stretch limo, dinner at north, and to end the night was a freaking awesome photoshoot with my crew. I had a complete blast, and from what I hear on the grapevine, so did everyone else. It’s Megan’s birthday tomorrow, so make sure you wish her a Happy Birthday everyone!

If you are interested in any prints from this event and seeing more, please give me a call at 520-344-0443, or email me at: info (at) spencerboerup.com

Courtney + Robert

I’ve been busy as a Christmas elf on Christmas eve lately, trying to wrap up a lot of things before Christmas and New Years, there is still A LOT to do.  Lot of new plans for next year, new resolutions and goals and maybe even some new looks for the branding coming soon :)   For all of you that have been following my blog and my work over the past couple of years, thank you so much for all your support (and blog comments)!  I’m looking forward to some big plans for 2010 and I can’t wait to get started.  First day back at the studio today (which also happens to be my 4 year wedding anniversary!!!!) and already getting some new inquiries from what I imagine to be the new brides that got engaged over the holiday break.  Welcome to the blog :)

Not to steal any thunder from Courtney + Roberts amazing pics, but I am IN LOVE with their session.  They came from Philadelphia for the holidays and luckily we had time to fit them in for their engagement portraits.  New locations, new ideas, old locations, new ideas . . . . always new and fresh here :) Robert is a commercial pilot so we had to start at a small airport just next to the Tucson Airport, then meandered over to the airport for some more relaxed and fun portraits, and topped off this mountain of an engagement session at the University of Arizona.  Hard to go wrong with anything, but I wish we had a tad more daylight to work with.

I can’t wait for their wedding this coming October!!  Thanks again Cournety & Robert for bringing the fun and drowning the camera with awesomeness.

Amanda & Jason are wed! | Saddlebrooke Wedding in Tucson Arizona

It was a very emotional day full of smiles, tears, laughs and hugs.  A day I will not soon forget.  I have been so honored to have known the Dillon family and all that I have been able to do with them, and now seeing Amanda & Jason is just thrilling to say the least.  Many of you will remember their historic engagement session where they just tore it up!  Check out their awesome engagement post to relive their awesome pics!  http://www.spencerboerup.com/blog/archives/238

Their wedding was at the beautiful Saddlebrooke Wedding venue, one of the very coolest venues, in my opinion, in all of Tucson.  Lots of beautiful window lighting, HUGE ceilings and just a great all around place!  Every minute of the day was just awesome, and although it was a long one, it was very invigorating and refreshing to be with a couple so in love with each other.  Congratulations again Amanda & Jason (and to your new families!), I can’t wait to photograph the little kiddos :)

WARNING: LOTS OF AWESOME IMAGES!!!

Awesome skies the entire day, can’t complain with that!

Check out that ROCK!

WOW!  Instant heart-throb, she is smokin’ in this one!  Looks like a top model to me . . .

My assistant Kyle grabbed these 2 great details

Another WOW!

Guys just couldn’t contain themselves, so much that they . . .

almost ran me over!

I loved this one how her dress is all poofed up, she looks like a Disney princess here!

Another great grab by Kyle, Amanda was so excited about all the people come she was always gazing out the windows to see the commotion :D

It was contagious after a bit apparently

Jason became very emotional as he saw his beautiful bride for the first time coming down the aisle

Another great shot by Kyle

Jason couldn’t keep that smile off his face the entire day!

Another great detail by Kyle

The Dillon’s are VERY proud and happy parents :)

If you look past their awesome beauty, you’ll see a small family of deer in the background, haha!

B&G FTW!

I love a couple that isn’t afraid to be goofy and have a lot of fun!

Surprise gift from Amanda’s family to Jason . . . is that Nacho Libre?

Dance shot FTW!

Just STUNNING!

I love the bubble exit, so awesome!

Two posts within 12 hours, crazy I know!  I just couldn’t contain my enthusiasm for this family’s portraits we did on Tuesday!  This little boy should be a model for all sorts of baby stuff, because he could really “work it”.  Enjoy!

Valerie & Steve – Ritz Carlton Engagement Portraits

Well, many people were impressed that I got to shoot at the Tucson Airport with unlimited access to anywhere I wanted to shoot. Well, I think I might have almost topped that this week! I got special corporate clearance from the Ritz Carlton in Tucson, and I had full access to the Championship golf course and club house, the entire afternoon with NO ONE ELSE THERE. Yes, you read it: full access to a world class golf facilities with an awesome couple, amazing lighting, and a large can of awesomeness. Only time limited our creativity, but boy was it an opportunity. Valerie & Steve were a blast to work with and look forward to their wedding come August! We started out in the downtown area for a little bit, then headed to the Ritz golf club and had a blast. Tiger Woods has won the Championship Match Play Tournament at this course a number of times . . . this place was EXACTLY like you would see in the really high-end magazines and stuff . . . top notch! I hope that someday I can go back, but I doubt I’ll get that kind of opp again. NOTE: You never know where you’ll get here in Tucson if you just drop my name :) Thanks again Valerie & Steve, you’re the bestest!
