erin + dean // ventana canyon wedding

I’ve been somewhat connected to Erin & Dean for a few years now, back when I photographed Erin’s cousin Katie’s wedding in 2009!  Almost 3 years to the date to be exact!  Such a beautiful wedding ceremony at a church I had never been to before, St. Thomas the Apostle, in the Tucson foothills.  I was worried it was going to be a mega hot day since the forecast was high 90s.  Thankfully we were all pleasantly surprised that it was just bright, and not scorching hot.  These two love birds are very much in love and it was an honor to have worked with their family on such a special day.  Ventana Canyon is a beautiful place and it couldn’t have been a better day for a spring wedding.  Thanks again Erin + Dean!

It has been a lot of fun getting to know Debbie & Aaron.  They brought me out to Chicago for their awesome engagement portraits last summer, and it was then that I could really tell that they were really in love with each other.  I anticipated that emotions would run high on the wedding, and they definitely did.  They are both some of the most thoughtful, caring and loving couples I’ve had the pleasure to work with.  It was a beautiful day in Tucson, and Ventana Canyon was an awesome venue to work with.  Thank you Debbie & Aaron for trusting my vision and allowing me to create some awesome portraits of your day!

Open House Success!

Wow, it’s hard to know where to start saying thank you and where to start grovelling for all those that have helped and supported me in getting the Studio off the ground! The Open House was a success and I thank everyone that was in attendance and helped make it a great evening. I wish I had more time to speak to everyone that came, there were quite a few people that showed up and made greeting everyone a little difficult, but it was still very humbling and awesome at the same time seeing everyone that came. I hope you all enjoyed it!

Now that the Studio Open House is over, I think I can start thinking about getting back to work on actual client projects, it has consumed so much of my time!  I feel proud to show it off though, it looks sweet!  My blog is definitely happy that I’m back on here, it’s been neglected a bit :(

My dad goofing off before everyone was arriving.  I can honestly say I owe all my success to him!

St. Croix, USVI Photography

Of course a photographer travels to an exotic island in the Caribbean to photograph an amazing wedding with an amazingly good-looking couple . . . and then doesn’t share the “other” pics. I do enjoy shooting landscapes, but I really just enjoyed the beauty of the island and relaxed. Of course this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to photograph such a beautiful place that I HAD to take my big camera and take some snaps. I love doing panoramas, as you’ll see at the bottom. I do hope that these give you a glimpse of the island of St. Croix in all it’s beauty. There is a lot to see, more to learn, and even more history that made this trip so memorable to me. A big thanks goes to Mr. Bidelspacher from the east end of the island for the historical information that he so willingly shared to me, that made me better enjoy my stay . . . immensely. Can’t wait to go back!

Something special that I learned prior to coming to St. Croix was that my great-great-great grandfather lived here when he was part of the Royal Danish army.  He later moved to Illinois and thats how part of my family came to the states.  It was meant to be that I go back and visit!

This is part of one of the larger intact ruins left from the Danes.  There are many many old sugar mill plantations on the island, some preserved and some not.

This was taken during the “rehearsal” for Amber & Carraig’s wedding.  Killer awesome sunset!!!

This is the Rust Op Twist sugar mill.  One of the largest and very well preserved still!

I took a snorkel tour to Buck Island, one of the most pristine beaches in the entire world (I’m not making that up either!)  JFK came to Buck island in the 60s and designated Buck Island the only National Underwater Park.  It is very well preserved and has some of the world’s best snorkeling.  I can tell you first hand it was absolutely AMAZING!  Below is the world famous “Turtle Beach”.

This was taken from our sail boat of the very very east tip of Buck Island, right where the boat ‘docked’ and where we snorkeled for an hour.  The water is really that clear, there is no magic or tricks here, it was simply that amazing!

Again, another from Turtle Beach, with a view of the north central part of the island, Christiansted.  I took a quick dive here, the water is absolutely amazing.  There were a bunch of small, clear transparent fish swimming everywhere.

A view of the east end of the island.  Just past those hills is the eastern most property of the USA.

Here is the south east bay.  Near here is the Divi Carina Resort/Casino.  You are looking at Grape Tree Bay, and on the very left side of the pic is where we shot Amber’s bridal pictures in the old, run-down resort hotel.

From atop a hill in the pic above you can see Isaac’s Bay, one of the less frequented beaches due to its accessibility.  On the other side of that hill is Jack’s Bay, supposed to be one of the most beautiful parts of the island.  It’s a good hike to get down there!

One last one from the other side of Turtle Beach on Buck Island.  Amazing day to take some pics!

The post that couldn’t wait! | Wedding Photobooth at Westward Look Resort in Tucson Arizona

So I’ve been super excited about this past weekend for a number of weeks now.  It was Emma & Danny’s wedding (a SUPER awesome couple) in Mesa and then in Tucson at the Westward Look (beautiful location).  I was able to try something new this wedding, something I just couldn’t wait for!  I don’t have a really cool name for it yet, but maybe I’ll get some collective support from all you blogstalkers out there . . . let’s just call it the ‘photobooth’ for now.  This ain’t your grandma’s photobooth, not even a photobooth by 2002′ standards, but totally wicked awesome and off the wall.

This is something new I’ll be adding to some of my packages, and as an add-on service to any current or future brides getting married!  The debut of our ‘photbooth’ was an absolute hit!!!  My assistants and I laughed our butts off and had so much fun with all the guests I can’t even begin to tell you how awesome it was.  Anyway, if YOU (yes YOU) are looking for something fun and awesome at your wedding reception, this is THE way to go.  You can only get it here folks :D

It was hard to pick just a few . . . there are 30 . . . and this is just the beginning of them.  I didn’t even tell Emma & Danny to bring props, but they did and it was totally awesome!  Hope you enjoy!

***CONTEST***   I am looking for a crazy cool name for our awesome-possum photobooth.  Please leave a comment at the bottom of the post with your idea in quotes!

It was awesome to see Nate & Meagan there, one of my previous couples!

A couple more | St Croix Wedding Portraits

It’s so hard to not have time to look through all of their pictures, let alone want to work on them instantly. But, while doing a quick gander (2 hours is quick for me!) through some of their post wedding pics, I just had to share a few . . . they are that good.

Back in the early 1800s, St Croix was owned and controlled by the Dutch. It had a heavy slave population (like most of the Caribbean did) and they produced a lot of sugar cane. This sugar was manufactured in the sugar mills, and some of these old 18th century mills are still on the island. We took a couple of fun portraits near the Rust Op, and then later headed down to Sandy Point (one of the nicest beaches on the island). Fun day, nice weather . . . these photographs far exceeded my expectations (and they were very high to begin with!). Enjoy :)

Happy New Year . . . from the USVI!

Ringing in the New Year is always an exciting time for me. It means a time of contemplation, meditation and goal planning for the New Year, reflecting back on the year that has passed, but also, a great sense of gratitude floods my mind for all the many wonderful things that I have been able to experience. I personally thank all of you who have helped me make this year an amazing year! May you all be blessed with a prosperous New Year as we look to uncertainty and doubt . . . but may we hold our heads up high and continue onward to achieving the goals, aspirations and desires that we all have.

I had to share one quick picture, which absolutely blew me away today. Many of you know that today was Amber & Carraig’s wedding, on the beautiful island of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Man, what an awesome day!!! The weather and lighting were just amazing, but as the say, a picture is worth 1000 words . . . I think this one adds a little more than just that!

Congratulations again Amber & Carraig!

Destination: St. Croix, USVI | Wedding in Virgin Islands

If I could sum up the experience I had this past week into one word, that would be impossible; but the closest I can get is “unforgettable”. It truly was an amazing experience to shoot with Amber & Carraig for such a special occasion, and it such a meaningful place. Amber grew up there and had not been back in 17 years, so it was an honor to be there with them and her family. St. Croix is a beautiful place, but much different that I had anticipated. Not different in a bad way, just different.

The first thing that Carraig let me know was that everything moves at a slower pace on the island . . . much slower (except for the traffic, where speed limits are ignored). Food is prepared slower, your bags at the airport are released at a lethargic pace, it’s just a very laid back (as you can imagine an island vacation should be like!) community. I had pictured in my mind, and from online photos, that it would have been somewhat like what I see in one of my favorite TV shows, LOST. Close, but not quite. It did have a very fascinating rainforest part, but quite interesting was that the other part of the island was somewhat like a desert. The beaches had lots of lava-rock on them, but the water was as clear as you see in the pictures! Aqua green and you can easily see 20-30ft down without a problem! Coral lined the shores like it was nobody’s business. The architecture is very old, leftover from the Danish when they owned the island (don’t quote me on this, I’m no historian by any means). It was fascinating though! There were a bunch of old sugar mills left from back in the day when harvesting sugar cane was the big thing to do, now they were left empty as tourist attractions. Other ruins dotted the island (as you’ll see from the photos).

One other special thing for me was that I found out that my Great-great-great-great grandfather had lived on the island when he was in the Royal Danish army, back in like the 1840s or something. Although I didn’t get to tour the Fort where he was stationed, I’ll be sure to do so when I return in January for the wedding. We did get a neat and special tour of the main Government building of the island, and the Royal Ballroom, now that was neat.

I was able to drive across the entire island, so I guess it’s safe to say that I saw just about everything, almost all of the beaches as well (the island isn’t that big). It was a lot of work, but well worth the price to have been able to create such beautiful photographs for Amber & Carraig. Thanks again you two!

Bisbee AZ – Matt & Mary | Engagement Portraits in Arizona

Wow. That pretty much sums up how cool Bisbee is, with an awesome couple, on a beautiful day! Bisbee has a long tradition (in my memories) of old antique shops, art galleries, fantasticly rustic buildings and great hot dogs. I didn’t get to sample the hot dogs this time around, but I did the others! If you have not been there, please check it out. Don’t forget the really cool mine tour, definitely worth it.

Mary & Matt are getting married later this July, but it was a total blast to work with them. It was hard to put down the camera (ever) because they were always doing something new and fun. My friend Travis came along and shot some video work for me, which hopefully in the near future I’ll be able to post on the blog (for all you that are wondering how cool my engagement sessions really are!)

(NOTE: I don’t have my fancy border people always ask me about because I’m doing this from my laptop in the Virgin Islands, didn’t have that much time to work on it! Updates to come)
